Bibb County Commissioners issue an emergency mask mandate in public places

Macon-Bibb County Commissioners voted in favor of an ordinance that requires masks in public places with a vote of 7-2.

The proposal states that the Macon-Bibb County Charter and The Macon-Bibb County government has a general police power to take those actions which are “necessary and proper to promote or protect the safety, health, peace, security, and general welfare of said government and its inhabitants."

The proposal requires residents and visitors to Macon-Bibb County to wear a face-covering over both the nose and mouth at all times while as practicable while outside their homes or places of residence.

The ordinance would put an exemption on :

  • If that person is under the age of 10 years;
  • In a personal vehicle or other enclosed space occupied only by persons who live in the same household or place of residence as such person;
  • When exercising outdoors;
  • When eating, drinking, or smoking;
  • When wearing a face covering materially causes or aggravates a health condition; or
  • When wearing a face covering would prevent the receipt of personal services, such as
  • medical, dental, or care services.

Those who fail to comply would be punished with a fine of $25.00 on the first offense, not more than $50 on the second offense, and not more than $100 on the third offense and any subsequent offenses.

An ordinance to appropriate up to $700,000 from Fund Balance for a Public Awareness Campaign was approved.

This campaign is to help inform information on COVID-19 prevention, control, response, and resources through December 30, 2020.
