Coronavirus relief food distribution at 11am at Macon Coliseum parking lot

Enough food to feed about 800 families will be distributed Thursday morning by the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank.

“We will supply ... families with fresh groceries that will include fresh fruit and other healthy items because we care,” the nonprofit posted on Facebook. “Please send this note to anyone that needs food.”

The food distribution is at 11 a.m. at the parking lot of the Macon Coliseum and will last until all the food is gone.

Everyone must arrive in a vehicle, according to community volunteer Jeff Battcher.

The food distribution was organized after the nonprofit started “receiving many calls from families impacted by the economic and health damages” from the COVID-19 outbreak, the Facebook post said.

“The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank has seen a doubling — in many instances a tripling — of request for food assistance in the 24 counties we serve,” Battcher said in an email.

About 800 boxes of food will be handed out, which represents about 30,000 meals, Battcher said.

A box of food is expected to last about a week, he said..

The food will be predominately produce and meat and include dry goods rice, lentils and canned goods, he said.
