According to a release from the Bibb County school district, a 15-year-old high school football player died after collapsing at the first day of practice in Middle Georgia. Bibb County school district officials say Joshua Ivory of Macon’s Southwest High School went into distress Monday, leading coaches to call an ambulance.

He later died at a hospital. No cause of death has been announced and an autopsy is planned.

The school district shared the news on Facebook Tuesday night saying, "We are sending our condolences to the entire Southwest family. At this time, all athletic and band practices have been canceled today out of respect for this loss and to conduct a proper review of all protocols."

Practice is set to resume Wednesday. The school district's Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones released the following statement Wednesday morning:

"Losing a student is never easy, no matter the circumstances. That’s why it was important for us to pause all athletic and band practices today in order to conduct a review of our protocols and procedures. Based upon an initial review of the events that took place yesterday at Southwest High School, the District has determined the school followed all GHSA protocols and requirements for practicing outdoors. Our assessment also indicated the school took extra precautions beyond what is required by GHSA standards for outdoor practices.."
