High Schooler Accused Of Faking Kidnapping During Zoom Class

A prank allegedly committed by a high school student during a Zoom class prompted school officials at Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland, to call the police. The student had his camera turned off at the start of the class, but when he turned it on, his teacher was shocked to see another person in a ski mask brandishing what appeared to be a gun.

The teacher immediately removed the student from the online class and contacted school administrators. Officials called the police, who rushed to the student's home.

Officers determined that the student was safe. The student said that the masked man was a friend he invited over and the weapon he was wielding was an airsoft rifle.

"We appreciate the swift action of our teacher for reporting this incident as we were able to contact the family and Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) to conduct a welfare check," Principal Elizabeth L. Thomas said in a letter to parents.

Officials did not say if the unidentified student was punished for the prank.

In her letter, Thomas told parents that "this incident serves as a reminder about the importance of speaking to your child about appropriate behavior while engaged in virtual learning."
